Light upon Light- by Anonymous (QI- 2013)

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. His light1 is like a niche in which there is a lamp, the lamp is in a crystal, the crystal is like a shining star, lit from ˹the oil of˺ a blessed olive tree, ˹located˺ neither to the east nor the west,2 whose oil would almost glow, even without being touched by fire. Light upon light! Allah guides whoever He wills to His light. And Allah sets forth parables for humanity. For Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things. (24:35)

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.

I was not at prepared for Ayat an Nur, although I have heard the recitations several times, it never had any impact on me. I was always fascinated by the words but never understood the Arabic terms used in the ayah, nor did I understand the concept described in it or the actual essence of the whole ayah.

Today was the day Allah chose for me to experience that which can never be explained by words. The words  مشكاة ,  مصباح زجاجة were  like a secret that would someday be revealed.

Now, Surat An Nur has become  the criterion for the level of my Imaan (faith), each ayah jolting me out of my comfort zone and making me think…”Now what am I supposed to do!

The beautiful way in which Allah explains an intangible concept with a tangible one is simply amazing. I was dazzled by the explanation during Tafseer and then suddenly the slide presentation of a human chest with a heart took me by surprise. As I heard the chest being compared to the مشكاة (niche) and the heart to the مصباح (lamp), I felt a storm building in my own chest, ready to explode. As if the words of Allah penetrated and stirred a strange realization in my heart. Allah’s words were guiding me to his Noor, telling me it’s not about where I have been but more importantly where I am now. The responsibility is upon me, will I drift back into the darknesses of ignorance or will I rise with this Noor that is forcing its way into my heart. Allah gives guidance to those who seek it sincerely but this is just the beginning. The journey to the final destination is not an easy one. The key is to submit to Allah.
