Arabic Calligraphy- Art irresistible-by Javeria Amir (QI-2016)

Calligraphy by Shazia Daud

Art has been an object of interest to people since decades and has captivated the minds of people till date. It generates feelings of every sort from joy to peace, from love to grief, portraying and depicting the thoughts of an individual in a precise and effective manner.

Calligraphy is one of the arts which is renowned and is of great value in the world, but Arabic calligraphy holds its own significance in Islam. Why?  Because it beautifies the language which was chosen for The Best of the books by none other than the Creator of Heavens and Earth.

“Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an in order that you may uunderstand.” (Surah Yousuf : 2)

Our Creator Himself has told us the reason for choosing Arabic language so being Muslims it is our duty to learn this language in order to preserve the Quran in its original script. Learning the art of calligraphy is no doubt a tough job but the efforts put into this work have their own sweet fruit namely ‘hasanaat’. From the point of learning to hold a calligraphy pen to making an Arabic dot has a feeling of joy on its own, when you are reminded of the reward you will be given for striving to learn the language of The Holy Quran.

As said by Prophet Muhammad (saw):

“How amazing is the case of the believer; there is good for him in everything, and this characteristic is exclusively for him alone. If he experiences something pleasant, he is thankful, and that is good for him; and if he comes across some diversity, he is patient, and that is good for him.”

 [Muslim]

So despite all the difficulties faced in the process of learning Arabic calligraphy the love of learning it will never die due to the huge reward it holds.

Taking calligraphy in aspect of art can be very inspirational and a good source of daa’wah. A research done in UK reported that art has a great effect on human mind and beautiful paintings generate a feel good sensation in an individual. During the study the professor said,  “What we are doing is giving scientific truth to what has been known for a long time – that beautiful paintings makes us feel much better”. Beautifully expressing the words of Allah will not only conquer the heart and mind of a person but will ultimately connect him to His Creator which is the most important factor.

May Allah help us to learn this art and take from us the best of His works with this skill.

Ameen
